As part of its new product development and plant growth plans, General Motors India is making plans to make an investment of $500 million (Rs 2,250 crore) by 2012.

The owner of the Chevrolet brand will unveil six new vehicles, which comprise a pick-up van, multi-seater van, hatchback, notchback, SUV and multi-purpose vehicle.

General Motors India Ltd has kicked off an LNG facility at its Halol plant in the state of Gujarat for supplying gas to its construction plant.

The novel manufacturing plant is an outcome of a contract between General Motors India, INOX India and BPCL for providing, re-gasification and last delivery of LNG at the company's facility.

After the launch of Tata Nano, other automakers are also planning to manufacture the low-cost car for the developing market. In this regard, General Motors has disclosed the fact that they are thinking to manufacture a car that can cost about USD 4000.

Mr. Nick Reilly, GM’s Executive Vice President of International Operations said, “When Tata Motors in India came out with their $2,500 Nano vehicle, it put a lot of auto makers on the spot.”

General Motors, the largest US automaker, has announced that it intends to trim down 31,500 more jobs in the US, as it confronts a severe slump that has it begging Congress for a $ 18-billion bailout.

According to the sources, the conglomerate planned to cut down its total US employment from the present level of 96,537 people to between 65,000 and 75,000 salaried and unionised workers by fiscal 2012.
