National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency to go-ahead

After setting a target of generating 20,000 MW solar power by 2020 under the Solar Mission, the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change will take up the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) at its meeting Monday.

The NMEEE, one of the eight national missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change is trying to raise energy energy efficiency.

The mission will help save 5% of yearly energy consumption and nearly 100 million tones of carbon dioxide per year.

“Our success in reducing energy intensity of our growth will also reduce the carbon intensity of our growth. This will have a beneficial impact on our emissions trajectory. The implementation of this mission will also be a powerful signal to the international community that we are willing to contribute in a significant manner to meet the global challenge of climate change,” said the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The mission is based upon “perform, achieve and trade’ method, which would allocate energy efficiency improvement targets to the country’s most energy intensive industrial units and grants for Energy Saving Certificates.
