Google Translates Wikipedia In 'Smaller Languages'

Google Translates Wikipedia In 'Smaller Languages'Google announced that it is jointly working with Wikipedia contributors, transcribers as well as Wikipedians across India, Africa and the Middle East with the aim to make the content accessible on wikipedia in different languages.

Wikipedia is a worldwide phenomenon, with over 15 million articles in the so-called common tongues such as German, English and French.

However, Google will help transform the Wikipedia content into different languages like Hindi, Arabic, Gujarati, Swahili, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil.

Michael Galvez, Product Manager at Google, stated, "To help Wikipedia become more helpful to speakers of smaller languages, we're working with volunteers, translators and Wikipedians across India, the Middle East and Africa to translate more than 16 million words for Wikipedia into Arabic, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Swahili, Tamil and Telugu."

The internet giant has progressed profoundly with Hindi, perhaps one of the larger smaller languages, however, the technique is not so understandable.

Google actually makes use of Google Trends to identify content and then the Translator Toolkit in order to convert it for Wikipedia.

Utilizing facts from Google Search, the group found the popular articles for Hindi speakers and concentrated on transforming those.

By making use of the Google Translator Toolkit, the group transformed 100 English articles adding up to 600,000 words.

"In three months, we used a combination of human and machine translation tools to translate 600,000 words from more than 100 articles in English Wikipedia, growing Hindi Wikipedia by almost 20 percent. We've since repeated this process for other languages, to bring our total number of words translated to 16 million," Galvez said.
