Sensex At 18,683.45; Nifty Hits 5,600 MarkThe 30-share index Sensex continued to gain, after making recovery from the session lows in noon trade, overlooking depressing worldwide market reactions.

Buying activity was being seen in select heavyweights.

At 01:14 p. m., the Sensex stood at 18,683.45, up 38.39 points.

In the meantime, the broad-based Nifty went up by 7.60 points to trade at 5,611.60.

Today, the Sensex belled the day with a fall of 17.39 points at 18,627.67, while the Nifty begun with a loss of 28.10 points at 5,575.90.

He top gainers in the 30-share index included ACC, up 1.80%, State Bank Of India, up 1.53%, Sterlite Industries up 1.34%, Mahindra & Mahindra up 1.07%, Tata Steel up 1.02% and Wipro up 0.99%.

On the other hand, the top losers were Rel Infra (-1.05%), ITC (-0.81%), Larsen & Toubro (-0.56%), HDFC Bank (-0.42%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (-0.36%) and NTPC (-0.33%).

The BSE Mid and small caps surged 0.56% and 0.96% respectively.

The IPO index gained 28.68 points, the HC index gained 38.44 points, the Metal index surged 99.57 points, while the Capital Goods index was down by 42.38 points.
