Chinese maritime authority is reportedly ready to sue ConocoPhillips over the two oil spills that happened in June, and engulfed large swaths of Bohai Bay in north China.
Wednesday’s report also said that the American oil company could soon face compensation sue by a new team of lawyers been setup by the State Oceanic Administration. The report further highlighted that an agency spokesman has confirmed 49 Chinese law firms for applying legal assistance in the matter.
The two spills that have been mentioned in the report occurred in the country’s largest offshore oilfield, Penglai 19-3 in June. It involved approximately 3,200 barrels of oil and drilling fluids that due to spills spread over more than
324 square miles in Bohai Bay. Though the Penglai field has now been co-developed by China National Offshore Oil Corporation, commonly known as Cnooc, it is now operated by ConocoPhillips China.
A vast spill occurred last year also from a PetroChina port facility in the city of Dalian. Lying on the edge of the Bohai Sea, the incident severely affected the people in the region. And, the occurrence of another similar incident in the region made environmental advocates and residents of the affected areas very angry.
Also, they are extremely disturbed with the government over delays in getting news or accurate reports of the spills.
