There was a high demand for someone who could protect the rights of woman, and could provide them a safe and healthy environment to live in.
After a flood of emails, finally UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has selected Penny William's as the first Global Ambassador for Women and Girls. Even Ms. Williams agreed with her observation, and said that this is a good way of bringing a global change. She said, ''Australia could help change this by providing role models, opportunities and capacity building. Engaging countries, so people see the benefit''.
Ms. Williams is 47 years old and is a diplomat by profession. She is from Tasmania and has 4 children. With the new responsibility, she will be tackling with all those gender inequality in the Asia-Pacific that in varying conditions make it difficult for women to survive. Along with this, she will also bring government’s attentions over the matters like needs of women after wars and conflicts.
Besides, she will also ensure that Australia's relieve dollars are efficiently used to tackle maternal deaths and domestic violence cases.
From this week onwards, she will be roaming in different parts of the world. Her first visit is scheduled for San Francisco as there she has to attend a meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation forum. She has been invited by the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
